I woke up in the middle of the night in my dorm room, suddenly feeling like I wasn’t as alone as I was when I fell asleep earlier that evening.

Sure enough, when I opened my eyes, I saw a figure standing by the foot of my bed. With a loud gasp, I sat up straight and snapped my fingers to summon a threatening ball of flame.

However, as the orange glow from my fire affinity lit up the room, I realized that I recognized the small intruder.

“Jesus Christ, Min,” I sighed, glaring at the ghostly ten-year-old who awkwardly stood by the door staring down at his shoes and wringing his hands. “You scared the hell out of me.”

“Sorry,” he squeaked. “Just doing my job, Miss.”

“Min, you don’t even get paid for this.”

“Figure of speech, madam,” he replied, offering me a wide, apologetic stare.

I pursed my lips at the ghost of the young necromancer, who was a distant relative of Aidan and also his most devoted messenger.

“Well, what is it then?” I grumbled, shifting to sit properly, rubbing my eyes with the backs of my hands. “What even time is it.”

“Just about half past midnight,” Min answered dutifully. “I’ve just come to let you know that Mr. Grimsbane is waiting for you down in the courtyard.”

I raised my eyebrows. “For what purpose?”

“He told me to tell you that it’s a surprise… and to not leave until you agreed to go down and meet him.”

I snorted. Leave it to Aidan to know exactly how I would respond to being woken up in the middle of the night by a dead kid asking me to go outside into the cold.

“Alright, alright,” I told him. “I’ll go, trust me. You can disappear again.”

“Yes, Miss,” replied Min with an adorable little bow. “Have a good evening.”

It thoroughly astounded me how someone with such polite ancestors could be as difficult and tempestuous as Aidan, but I suppose that wasn’t exactly a fair judgement for me to make. I was well aware of how difficult I was to deal with despite my own relatively well-mannered ancestors.

Min faded away into a mist and I frowned to myself. What was Aidan doing coming onto Brayton’s campus so late at night? Wasn’t it dangerous to be walking around the city of Boston at that hour? Humans could be unpredictable and disturbingly violent.

With a loud exhale, I waved my hand to move the flame in my palm to the candle on my desk and then flung off the blanket. Kendra and I had returned to campus late that evening after spending the day in the mountains with Damien. After my flight with him, we met up with Kendra back at the car and went on a short hike the normal way—with legs and feet, not wings.

It was a genuinely nice afternoon. For those brief few hours, I was able to forget about tragedy and scandal and the dark secrets I carried with me every single day. Kendra, with the help of Damien,
